Bracing for Impact

The Queensland Commission of Inquiry into alleged misconduct by the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) begins today, with observers intrigued at how far its reach will extend.

The Inquiry will investigate the CFMEU’s dealings across major infrastructure projects, its financial practices, labour arrangements, and relationships with related parties. With the power to compel production of documents and summon witnesses, the Inquiry’s scope is broad and its potential impact significant.

The Inquiry is led by Commissioner Stuart John Wood AM KC, one of Australia’s most experienced advocates with over three decades in industrial relations and constitutional law. He is supported by Secretary Robert (Bob) Gee APM, a former Deputy Police Commissioner and State Disaster Coordinator with 40 years’ service to Queensland, along with formidable advocate as Counsel Assisting, Liam Kelly KC, and a highly regarded legal team including Kate Juhasz, and Polina Kinchina.

The uncertainty surrounding the Inquiry is already driving businesses to act. Legal teams are being engaged at speed as organisations likely to be impacted by the Inquiry prepare as best they can to safeguard employees and stakeholders as well as broader business interests. Key issues regarding witness testimony and document production warrant immediate consideration if not action.

With the Commissioner’s final report expected by 31 July 2026, it remains to be seen how far this Inquiry will go, however, the terms of reference provide a very broad ambit for investigation.

Mullins Lawyers is monitoring developments closely and stands ready to support businesses and individuals in preparing for potential involvement and responding effectively as the Inquiry progresses.
